2 Belgium government
difficulties could endanger EU treaty
ratification

EUobserver - With Belgium still struggling to form a new government, fears are growing that the country will not
be able to ratify the EU's Lisbon treaty in December, stalling the
overall ratification process.
On 19 October in Lisbon, the 27 EU member states agreed to formally sign
the new European treaty on 13 December and put it up for ratification next year,
aiming for it to come into place in early 2009. Open

2 Unclear EU treaty
provisions causing 'nervousness'

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Although the ink has barely dried on the EU's new
treaty, analysts are already scratching their heads as to how the document, with
its unclear division of power between the EU's top politicians, is going to work
in practice.
Come
2009, when the Reform Treaty is supposed to click into place, there will be
three big jobs to be had in Brussels - the president of the European
Commission;
the president of the European Council and the EU High Representative for Foreign
Affairs and Security Policy. Open link to

2 MEPs to fight low turnout
in European elections
http://euobserver.com/9/25243/?rk=1
29.11.2007 - 17:40 CET | By Honor Mahony
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - MEPs on Thursday (29 November) approved a new set
of rules they hope will spur citizens to vote in the five-yearly European
elections, a pan-European event that has regularly seen turnout fall below 30
percent in the individual member states. Just
days after only 29 percent of the Romanian electorate turned out for the
country's first ever European elections, MEPs said that European
political parties - currently numbering ten - should be able to use public money
to finance political campaigns. Open link to

"The EU’s borders should remain open and we strongly support further EU
enlargement"
Igor Sencar. Slovenia has put itself on a direct collision course with
France over plans for future enlargement of the EU. Speaking in Brussels on
Wednesday, Igor Sencar, Slovenian ambassador to the EU, said that
talks paving the way for the EU to further expand beyond its current 27 members
would be one of the priorities of its upcoming presidency. The policy flies in
the face of the vision of Europe’s future favoured by French president Nicolas
Sarkozy. He has cautioned against further enlargement, particularly the
moves to include Turkey in the EU. Open link to

2 European far-right bloc
collapses
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/europe/7094861.stm
Wednesday, 14 November 2007, 16:12 GMT
The European parliament's
far-right bloc has collapsed after five Romanian MEPs resigned over an Italian
colleague's "xenophobic" remarks.
Italian
MEP Alessandra Mussolini, the grand-daughter of fascist dictator Benito
Mussolini, reportedly described Romanians as "habitual
law-breakers".
Italy recently expelled 20 Romanians following a spate of violent crimes. The
resignations take the bloc's membership below the minimum required for a
grouping in the parliament. Open link to

Syrian-Born Politician Has Key Role in Denmark's First Election Since
Prophet Controversy
COPENHAGEN, Denmark Nov 12, 2007 (AP)
Share A campaign poster for this week's national elections evoked some of
quiet Denmark's most turbulent days: the wave
of Muslim rioting against cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad printed last year in
a Danish newspaper. Displayed at campaign rallies of the nationalist
Danish People's Party, it depicted an artist's hand drawing a picture of
Muhammad with the text "Freedom of speech is Danish, censorship is not."

Europe is fretting about too much immigration when it needs even
more
CAST your eye around Europe, and you find a funk about foreigners. Denmark's voters have given the
anti-immigration Danish People's Party its fourth successive rise in voting
share. The Swiss gave 29% of their votes to the xenophobic Swiss
People's Party. An anti-foreigner party is the second-biggest in Norway. A fifth
of Flemish voters in Belgium back the far-right Vlaams Belang.

Italy moves to expel EU nationals as part of crime
crackdown
Rome, Italy, 6.11.2007, 14:02, (EU Observer)
Italian authorities have started rounding up Romanian immigrants
illegally residing in the country following a fast-track adoption of a decree
allowing expulsions of EU citizens who pose a threat to public security.
The country's government adopted the measures last week following a sharp rise of crime blamed
mainly on foreign nationals, particularly from Romania whose citizens
have been accused of 76 murders since June. Open

A
transcript of the highlights of the FT’s interview with Romano Prodi, Italy’s
prime minister, in Rome on November 5: FT:
As president of the European Commission in 2004 you were a strong proponent of
enlargement, when directive 38 governing the movement of EU citizens was passed.
The Italian interior minister, Giuliano Amato, has criticised aspects of this
directive. With the benefit of hindsight do you think the European Union failed
to anticipate the consequences of opening its borders in this way to countries
like Romania and Bulgaria, and that this was a mistake? Open

7 Against violence in sport - UEFA and
EU host high-level conference
http://ec.europa.eu/commission_barroso/frattini/webroot/news/default_en.htm 29.11.2007
"Violence in sport is
clearly destructive and counter-productive. We must strengthen our efforts to
prevent violence in particular as risk supporters can and do exploit variations
in policing, judicial and in stadia safety and security arrangements. But on its
own, no country can find the best solutions for tackling hooliganism and
violence in sport. The European Commission has a key role to
play in that it can facilitate the active involvement of law enforcement
services, judicial authorities, sports federations, supporters organisations and
other stakeholders so that ultimately we can all enjoy sport
peacefully," Franco Frattini, the Vice-President of the European
Commission responsible for the area of Justice, Freedom and Security said as the
European Commission, jointly with the Portuguese Presidency of the Council, the
European Parliament and in association with UEFA, hosted a high-level conference
entitled "Towards a European Union Strategy against violence in sport" on 28 and
29 November 2007 in Brussels. Open
