Rimini Meeting Warns of Secularist Threat  - Says Society Could Loose Christian Roots

RIMINI, Italy, AUG. 27, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Modern man must not fall prey to secularism, concluded participants in the Meeting of Friendship Among Peoples. This was said during a panel discussion on Wednesday entitled "Secularism versus Laicism," part of the Rimini meeting organized by the movement Communion and Liberation, Aug. 20-26.

Polish professor Nikolaus Lobkowicz, director of the Center of Studies on Eastern and Central Europe, explained that "secularism is the attempt to limit or even exclude the influence of the Church and of religion on public life," whereas the vocation of the layman should be that of "seeking the kingdom of God by treating temporal things according to God's order."

Lobkowicz continued: "Secularism intends to prevent someone in politics from appealing to his faith. It has even created taboos that are not discussed (abortion, homosexuality, scientific research). "The modern state must be very careful not to transform secularism into a new religion, as occurred in the Communist countries."

"All this is not reasonable," he added, because, in fact, "all the values included in the constitutions of European states have an undeniable Christian origin and, without Christianity, they would never have arisen."

Close extremist schools - Kelly

Islamic schools that promote "isolationism" and extremism should be closed, Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly has said.

But people should not be threatened by symbols of faiths such as Islam, Mrs Kelly told the BBC. She added the government was opposed to any form of law contrary to British civil law, such as Sharia law. Mrs Kelly also expressed surprise at a decision to caution a football player who crossed himself during a match.

'Revolutionaries'

She said the government had to "stamp out" Muslim schools which were trying to change British society to fit Islamic values. "They should be shut down," she said. "Different institutions are open to abuse and where we find abuse we have got to stamp it out and prevent that happening." But she said Muslims were entitled to the same rights as Anglicans, Catholics, Hindus and Jewish groups which all had faith schools

An official from the German government has for the first time reacted to the steady souring of relations between Warsaw and Berlin and suggested human rights are being erroded in Poland. Gunter Nooke, Christrian Democrat human rights experts for the German government, criticised Poland in the influential German weekly, Der Spiegel, about its handling of a museum exhibition highlighting the fate of the millions expelled from their homes in the 20th century, including Germans in the post war period.

Brussels is using terrorism to further its federal ambitions

The European Union is a solution in search of a problem. Whatever the question, the answer is invariably "more Europe". War in Lebanon? We need to be able to deploy an EU army. A breakdown in the World Trade Organisation talks? Let's have a more integrated European economy. People voted against the constitution? They obviously thought it didn't go far enough

SERBIA – HUMAN RIGHTS

Evangelicals in Serbia are also worried about a controversial new religion law

http://www.ywameurope.org/index2.htm  w e e k l y  w o r d, 14 Aug /06, Jeff Fountain

Evangelicals in Serbia are also worried about a controversial new religion law rushed through the National Assembly just before the  Serbian Easter holiday. The law requires churches outside of seven  'traditional' faiths to reapply for legal status and pay property  taxes. This includes Baptists, Pentecostals, Anglicans, Methodists,  Adventists and others who have worked in Serbia for decades. Many NGOs, religious communities and the Council of Europe's Venice  Commission are highly critical of the law

European values and identity

In Short: Debates about European identity have intensified in the context of EU enlargement and the EU Constitutional Treaty. Although the motto "unity in diversity" is generally seen as best describing the aim of the EU, opinions differ widely as to how it should be understood.

Merkel reignites 'Christian constitution' debate

Published: Tuesday 29 August 2006 | Updated: 08:23 | Print this article

In Short:- Following an audience with the Pope, German Chancellor Angela Merkel revives debate about a reference to God in the future EU constitution.

Background:- German Chancellor Angela Merkel told The Guardian on 29 August that she would like to see Europe’s “Christian values” prevalent in a new version of the EU constitution. Merkel said that she sees a reference to God as an “essential element” in the constitution, because Christianity's "significant influence" on European history. In a move that is bound to reopen religious debate in the EU, the Christian Democrat chancellor has promised to revive the EU constitution in January 2007 when Germany takes the helm of the EU Presidency. Any reference to God or Christianity is expected to meet strong resistance from secular countries, such as France and the United Kingdom, as well as the Nordic countries, as was the case during debate on the issue during the Convention on the Future of Europe. (see LinksDossier).

A new 'religion' debate could also cast dark clouds over Turkey’s potential accession to the EU - the draft EU constitution (which was rejected by France and the Netherlands) at present only makes reference to “inspiration from the cultural, religious and humanist inheritance of Europe”.

EU Berlin declaration to be ‘highly political’

EU leaders must agree a ringing political statement of Europe’s values and priorities for a Berlin declaration next year, José Manuel Barroso has told MEPs.

The European commission president has pushed hard for Europe’s leaders to mark the EU’s 50th birthday by renewing their European vows. March 25 next year will mark five decades since the signing of the founding 1957 Treaty of Rome – the same name that was to given to the EU constitution sunk by French and Dutch voters.

A “Berlin declaration” will now take place under the German EU presidency in a bid to add some political soul to Europe’s efforts to fill the vacuum left by the demise of the European constitution.” This is not just about rules but a declaration of values,” Barroso told the European parliament in a debate on last weeks EU summit.

“March 2007 must be more than a commemoration of past achievements; it must be a restatement and recommitment to our values and ambitions, looking to the future for an enlarged Europe.”

Barroso’s is calling on national governments to sign up to a political text that can act as the organising principle for a new EU institutional settlement in 2009.

Hans-Gert Poettering, leader of the parliament’s largest, centre-right EPP, political bloc welcomed the

invitation.“What I would like to suggest is that at the political level we set a working group of representative of the parliament, the council and commission,” he said.“Working together, we can make ensure March 25… is a statement which will be our guiding light for the future of Europe.”

But Green leader Monica Frassoni is concerned a 2007 Berlin declaration may just end up as an event for euro elites. “I am rather frightened by this solemn celebration next March… we should not just have this solemn discussion ourselves often we are just talking to each other,” she said.
