Pray For The New Law [Christian Minorities] In Serbia To Be Reversed

The Vice President of the European Baptist Federation (EBF), Pastor Toma Magda, has called for Baptists throughout Europe to spend a week in prayer for the 'disenfranchised Christian minorities of Serbia'.

The Evangelical Methodist Church is also unfairly discriminated against by the new legislation. They join with the Baptists in calling for this week of prayer. Pastor Magda, from Croatia, explained how since the passing of the new laws on Church and religion in April 2006, the small evangelical groups in Serbia are on much weaker legal footing than officially-recognised religious organisations. In a written appeal, Magda said, ‘the law has been passed and it appears as if it could no longer be changed. But we believe in a God who is greater and has everything under control. He can do miracles.’ Serbia and Montenegro are home to approximately 3,000 Baptists in 60 congregations, and the Evangelical Methodists number about 1,000

Europe

Here a vision from Erich Reber from Kingdom Ministries about Europe that we think is accurate:

- The Lord Jesus is standing in front of the gates of Europe and is knocking. He is willing to once again visit the European nations, once again equip people with the power of his Spirit, so that there will be hundreds of evangelists like John Wesley. Hundreds of men and women with a healing gift like that of Smith Wigglesworth, hundreds that are filled with mercy like Mother Theresa and with energy like Wiliam Booth. Hundreds of heroes of faith and prayer warriors like John Knox.

Jesus is willing to visit Europe once again, so that flocks of people will turn to him, accept him as Lord and will follow him.He saw in a vision that stadiums will be filled and the mighty power of God will be revealed. He saw how the Lord will give frankness to preach his word and how healings, signs and wonders will happen.

And he also saw that this tremendous visitation of God will be connected with strong shakenings....

 Prayer :

Take this vision, move it in your hearts. Let the Holy Spirit bring forth faith for these things in you. Then start to speak according to your faith to call forth these things in Europe and pray for them.

For a Europe that will know its Lord.

Austrian chancellor suggests EU-wide referendum on constitution

- 12.06.2006 - 09:57  http://euobserver.com/9/21827/?rk=1

The head of the outgoing Austrian EU presidency chancellor Wolfgang Schussel believes a pan-European referendum could be a way forward to push the stranded EU constitution into floating waters.

Leaders chart future for Europe

EU leaders have set 2008 as a target for making changes to the EU rule book, which are needed for further expansion. A constitution setting out a series of such reforms was rejected by France and Holland last year, and the EU is split over whether it can be revived. Germany will suggest ways of continuing the reform process next year, with the "necessary steps" being taken in 2008. The leaders also proposed a list of practical policies designed to show the EU makes a difference to voters' lives.

In other decisions, the 25 leaders:

- agreed to televise meetings of EU ministers

- said they would honour commitments made to countries that want to join the EU

- asked the European Commission to draw up a report on the EU's ability to absorb new members

- urged Bulgaria and Romania to carry out crucial reforms that will enable them to join the EU on time in January

- said Slovenia can introduce the euro in January

- backed a plan for donors to release emergency aid to the Palestinians, bypassing the Hamas-led government

Absorption

On the question of enlargement, the summit debated how much weight to give to the EU's capacity to "absorb" new members, amid signs that public opinion in some Western European countries is cool towards further expansion. Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel said the leaders had dropped the idea of making "absorption capacity" an additional criterion for further enlargement.

The leaders asked the European Commission to produce a report this year to define exactly what absorption capacity is. The President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, told the BBC on Thursday that all democracies had to take account of public opinion. He added that it was possible for Turkey to join the EU, but it would be very difficult. "First of all (it will be) very demanding for them but also demanding for us here to be ready to accommodate such an important big country that is seen by so many of us as culturally different from, let's say, mainstream Europe," he said.

Openness

On the constitution, EU members are split between those who would like to bury it and those who would like to revive it, in one form or another. Some countries, including the UK and Poland, opposed the idea of setting a timetable for institutional reforms. But UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said there was an obvious need to look at how Europe can operate more effectively when it is expanding "so greatly". He said the timetable for expansion gave the EU "effectively another couple of years" to do this.

The leaders' decision to approve a list of practical policies, aimed at regaining voters' trust after the failure of the constitution, stems partly from a UK initiative launched at a summit in Hampton Court last year. "I think what citizens want out of Europe is to concentrate on the bread and butter key issues - about the economy, about illegal immigration, about security - that really worry them," Mr Blair said. If the EU was seen to be delivering real change for the better, he added, voters would be more likely to say Yes when asked to approve to institutional reforms.

Constitutional Treaty: the "reflection period"

In Short:After the rejection of the EU Constitutional Treaty in France and the Netherlands in late spring 2005, a "period of reflection" on the future of Europe was launched to reconnect the citizens with the European project and to decide the fate of the Constitution. So far, its outcome is uncertain.

Latest & next steps:

15-16 June 2006: At the summit in Brussels the EU heads of state and government will discuss next steps on the Constitutional Treaty

July 2006: end of consultation on Commission communication white paper

July - December 2006: The Finnish Presidency wants to "start preliminary work on exploring the options regarding the Constitutional Treaty"

December 2006: Commission review on the benefits of enlargement and the EU's "absorption capacity"

25 March 2007, Berlin: Celebration of 50 year anniversary of Treaty of Rome and, possibly, solemn declaration on commitment to EU values and objectives (see EurActiv, 11 May 2006)

June 2007: The German presidency wants to put forward proposals on how to proceed with the Constitutional Treaty

End 2007: possibly end of period of reflection

July-December 2008: possibly concrete steps by French Presidency on ratification

June 2009: European Parliament elections; there are also calls for a EU-wide referendum on the Constitution

EU summit: Extension of reflection period makes headlines

In Short:

Press commentators agree that the decision to postpone the final verdict on the shipwrecked EU Constitution until end 2008 is the biggest news having come out of the summit.

Background:

On 15 and 16 June 2006 EU leaders agreed in Brussels to extend the "reflection period" on the EU constitution, to make Council meetings public and to pay more attention to the "absorption capacity" of the EU when taking decisions on further enlargements (see EurActiv 16 June 2006).

However, the summit sparked little press interest. Most commentators concentrated on the uncertain fate of the constitution.

Positions:

Saying that "there’s nothing wrong with a cheap laugh", BBC Europe  editor Mark Mardell said that those who had called the EU summit the dullest ever, were proven wrong. After all, there would be some kind of constitutional text or treaty in two years time. Furthermore, the summit was likely to generate controversies.

The Times believes that “the biggest decision by EU leaders at their Spring summit in Brussels was indecision as they shelved their embattled constitution for at least two years.” The reflection period had not resulted in the break of the constitutional impasse.

European Research Funding.

From: CARE impact.direct@care.org.uk,  :6/30/2006

Please pray that the Member States which have spoken out against EU funds being used for such research such as embryo and embryonic stem cell research would be able to stand firm, and that other EU Member States would join them in their stand.

If you live in Ireland or Luxembourg, please write to your research Minister, asking him to ensure that your tax contribution to European research cannot be spent on research that requires the destruction of human life and is illegal in your country, but is spent on research that can be supported by all EU citizens and undertaken in any EU country.
