1 PRAYER MOVEMENTS & NATIONS

The European Union of Prayer in Berlin, representing member nations of the EU, met in prayer during the 50th anniversary of that institution. Besides holding worship and prayer sessions, they spent some time in fellowship and prayer with Berlin Pastors and other Christians. They will be following the Presidency as it goes from nation to nation. They pray that spiritual values and biblical principles, and democratic and human rights continue to have their place in the EU. Particular strategic attention in prayer will be given to family concerns, Mid East developments, immigration and terrorism (Islam). The attendees were especially pleased at the personal comments of the current President of the EU, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, concerning the "Judeo-Christian Heritage" of Europe which she made during the big celebration of the anniversary. The EU of Prayer will continue to encourage the increasing prayer movement across the continent. [Ortwin Schweitzer; Erlachstr. 45, 70771 Leinfelden-Echterdingen; www.beter-im-aufbruch.de.vu]

Prayer for Berlin

Complete contact information on our website: www.gebet-fuer-berlin.de

During the EU Summit and anniversary celebration on March 24-25 in Berlin, the city was peaceful and cheerful, nearly like the days during the Soccer World Cup in 2006. The heads of state from 27 countries, the many guests and journalists felt at home here in the “center” of Europe. (by the way, our prayer teams were on the scene) – ended non-violent in spite of radical vocabulary and had only 10% of the expected number of participants. Although the “Berlin Document” that was produced at the Summit is only a low-content compromise without reference to the Christian roots of the continent, Chancellor Angela Merkel added in her widely-publicized speech at the ceremony, “For me, this understanding of mankind comes from the Judeo-Christian values in Europe”. This very clear statement is an answer to prayer! Let us pray that our chancellor’s influence will increase in this regard

France's presidential election - Four-way fight

http://www.economist.com/world/europe/PrinterFriendly.cfm?story_id=892935

Mar 29th 2007 | PARIS  - Peter Schrank

The French presidential election is looking harder than ever to call

WITH just three weeks left before they go to the polls for the first round of their presidential election, French voters seem in a capricious mood. If there is one thing they dislike, it is a pre-written electoral script. They demonstrated this in 2002 by putting the far-right Jean-Marie Le Pen into the second round, ahead of the Socialist candidate. They did it again in 2005, by rejecting the European Union constitution in a referendum. This year they have already staged one rebellion in the opinion polls, by catapulting a third man—François Bayrou—into the leading pack. As his novelty value seems to be fading, what surprise might the French electorate have in store next? .[more on web]

French candidates warned on approach to EU

France's presidential candidates are warned that they risk missing the chance to shake their country out of its "arrogant" and isolated position in Europe, by failing to map out a positive French future in the European Union. Jacques Barrot, France's European commissioner, says Europe is in danger of becoming the "big forgotten issue" in the French presidential campaign, at a time when the country needs to get out of its "whingeing, pessimistic and defensive" mindset. The EU transport chief says a positive debate is vital in a country that, by voting No to the European constitutional treaty in 2005, "did a Zidane" to the Union – a reference to the French footballer's infamous World Cup final headbutt.

He wants France to resume its leadership role in Europe, promoting policies that citizens care about such as giving the EU a greater role in police co-operation, immigration, protecting human rights and peacekeeping missions. Instead, he claims the candidates – principally Nicolas Sarkozy from the right and Ségolène Royal on the left – have either played down European issues or used the EU as a scapegoat for France's problems..[more on web]

Poland to fight for 'square root' law in EU treaty - 29.03.2007 - 09:27

Poland plans to propose a new voting system in the upcoming EU treaty talks that will be based on square roots of populations instead of simple populations. The so-called "Penrose square root law" would give Warsaw more say against Berlin, with one Polish official already talking about potential Polish vetoes in the game. .[more on web]

 In search of the elusive European soul

The European Union was a baby conceived by many fathers, including the very American George Marshall, whose famous plan abolished trade barriers and fostered economic co-operation between European nations. A union of 27 nations was not even a dream 50 years ago, when six countries formed the European Economic Community.

Now that we have a union, nobody appears to love it very much. The French and the Dutch, in a fit of pique, voted against an EU constitution that few people bothered to read. Who can blame them? It was unreadable. "We must give a soul to Europe," said Angela Merkel, German chancellor, whose country currently presides over the EU. Speaking at a recent conference entitled A Soul for Europe, the German filmmaker Wim Wenders struck a similar note. He fretted about a spiritual vacuum where the heart of Europe should be. Not surprisingly for a man in his line of business, he believes that the spirit is made of celluloid and the European soul is found in movies by Pedro Almódovar, Federico Fellini and Andrzej Wajda..[more on web]

As the EU turns 50, Pope says it's on path to oblivion

• Europe 'ignoring Christian roots' says Benedict XVI

[EXCERPT] In his remarks to bishops gathered for ceremonies in Rome to mark the signing of the treaty that founded the EU in 1957, the Pope declared that the reluctance of women in Europe to have babies and Europe's failure to regenerate itself was putting the continent on the path to oblivion. "From a demographic standpoint ... Europe seems set on a path that could lead it to take leave of history," he warned. Europe was "losing faith in its own future"..[more on web]

Merkel wants EU to be vocal about Christian roots

http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=319152007

  Wed 28 Feb 2007

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who aims to relaunch the EU constitution, made a plea on Wednesday for the bloc to include references to its Christian roots in the document. "The period of secularisation was important, but I see us living in a changed world where it is incumbent on politicians and political documents to spell out more clearly their spiritual roots," Merkel said in a speech on Europe to members of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU). "If we are honest, we often lack the strength to clearly state what our beliefs are and that makes us less credible to others with different beliefs and values." Plans to include a reference to Europe's Christian roots in the original EU constitutional treaty were blocked by French President Jacques Chirac.

Merkel, as holder of the EU's rotating presidency, is in the process of reviving that treaty, which was rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005. She has vowed to present an outline and timetable for a new document at a June summit in Brussels. Some countries, notably Poland, favour reintroducing a reference to Christianity in the new charter.French conservative presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy, who has criticised France's official secularism as too rigid, may also support such a campaign if elected, some German officials are hoping. "I can't deny that I would have preferred to see a clearer reference to God based on Christian ideals in the constitution," Merkel said. She added, however, that the European Union was not a "Christian club" and stressed the need for tolerance of all religions in the bloc. .[more on web]

Fundamental Rights Agency opened amid criticism

Published: Friday 2 March 2007 | Updated: Thursday 15 March 2007

The Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA), focusing primarily on the areas of racism and discrimination and formally opened on 1 March 2007 in Vienna, has been criticised as being "a superfluous institution with a limited mandate".

Brief News: Commission ups pressure against discrimination

The FRA will replace and build on the work of the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC). According to the Commission, the agency has three key functions:

-       collect information and data;

-       provide advice to the European Union and its member states, and;

-       promote dialogue with civil society to raise public awareness of fundamental rights.

Commission Vice-President Frattini said: "We must promote fundamental rights if we are to achieve a Europe of which we can all be proud. A Europe which is richly diverse, where people are integrated and live side by side and gender, racial and other inequalities are overcome." .[more on web]

Rise in radical Islam last straw for Lebanon's Christians

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/04/01/wleb01.xml&DCMP=EMC-new_01042007

By Michael Hirst in Beirut, Sunday Telegraph

Christians are fleeing Lebanon to escape political and economic crises and signs that radical Islam is on the rise in the country.

In a poll to be published next month which was exclusively leaked to The Sunday Telegraph, nearly half of all Maronites, the largest Christian denomination in the country, said they were considering emigrating. Of these, more than 100,000 have submitted visa applications to foreign embassies. Their exodus could have a devastating effect on the country, robbing it of an influential minority which has acted as an important counter-balance to the forces of Islamic extremism. About 60,000 Christians have already left since last summer's war between Israel and Hezbollah. Many who remain fear that a violent showdown between rival Sunni and Shia factions is looming. "If we love our children we have to tell them to get out," said Maria, a Christian mother of one from the northern city of Tripoli, who refused to give her surname for fear of reprisal. "When my daughter finished her high school I sent her to Europe, and I will follow her if I can."
