Milestone: [Your Prayer: YES, NO,
Why]
1 Jan. 2009: Treaty
expected to enter into force once all 27 member states have ratified
it.
The
European Union of Prayer
From 3 to 8 March
representatives from the 27 EU member nations will join together in intercessory
prayer for the European Union and the Europeans. As Christians they will pray to
help create a more perfect society for the good of all. They will meet in
Slovenia, the nation holding the presidency, and take on the tough issues in
prayer. Without God there is no real workable knowledge. With God all things are
possible. Pray for a time of productive meeting and prayer.

hope for Europe

'Hope' seems to be
bubbling up all over Europe this year as a theme for national strategies,
city-wide evangelism and inspirational events. Young evangelical leaders in Poland,
for example, are spearheading an initiative under the banner 'Realna Nadzieja'
(Real Hope) that aims to mobilize the whole Christian community across the whole
nation to impact the whole of society. They
aim to recruit 1,000 young workers to converge this summer on a town
south of Warsaw renowned for its social problems. They will serve the city
practically, from cleaning river banks to renovating people's homes. A
similar 'project of kindness' - Merseyfest - has developed in Liverpool over the
past four years. It comprises hundreds of social projects, initiated by
Christians that are bringing positive changes throughout the region. A
ten-day Festival of Hope will crown Liverpool's status as European Capital of
Culture this year, and over 1,000 young adults will gather for a
Global Youth Congress in June to discuss issues such as international
development, law and human rights, business, the environment and sustainable
development, education and culture, as well as engage in practical
projects.

The Western church’s
growing tendency to blur theological differences and not uphold the absolute
truth is contributing to the threat of radical Islam to the Western world, said
a highly respected expert on Islam.Patrick Sookhdeo, the director of the
Institute for the Study of Islam and Christianity, said churches are moving away
from central doctrines that teach about separation and instead conforming to
secular society’s ideology of inclusion. “When faced with the uniqueness of
Christ we become inclusive. He loves everybody so we talk about love, and hell
and damnation goes out the window,” said Sookhdeo. “It becomes too embarrassing.
So our church has conformed itself according to
society.”

Presidency welcomes ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by
France

The Slovenian
Presidency welcomes the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by France. France is
thus the fifth state to ratify this important instrument, which will enhance
democracy and the effectiveness of the EU’s functioning, as well as strengthen
its cohesion. At the same time, the Treaty will enable the European Union to
become much more effective externally. The
Treaty, signed on 13 December 2007, will enter into force as soon as it is
ratified by all 27 Member States. Therefore, each ratification is a
significant step towards the final objective – entry into force of the Treaty
within the period provided for in the Berlin Declaration. This step is
particularly important in the case of France, where ratification of the previous
"constitutional" treaty fell through.

Three years after
French citizens said 'no' to the European constitution, French MPs and senators
on Thursday voted to adopt the EU's new 'Reform Treaty'. Meanwhile, the
Slovakian parliament indefinitely postponed a vote on its ratification amid
wrangling in parliament.
Background:
Thus far, Hungary,
Romania, Slovenia and Malta have already ratified the treaty. All four did so by
parliamentary vote (see EurActiv 18/12/07, 30/01/08, 05/02/08).

The commissioner for
external relations and European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) Benita
Ferrero-Waldner has warned Azerbaijan's leaders that so-called frozen conflicts
in the South Caucasus region could be a barrier to deeper cooperation with the
European Union."It is evident that the presence of frozen
conflicts in the region is an obstacle to further development of the countries
individually, including their own cooperation at the regional level,"
the commissioner told local reporters after the opening of a new commission
delegation in Baku."And it also limits the possibilities of cooperation
initiatives that could be implemented by the European Commission," she added,
according to Azeri news service Today.az.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS
- Every year thousands of Africans put their lives into the hands of
unscrupulous traffickers and crowd onto unsafe fishing boats to try to reach
Europe across stormy waters. All along our coastlines, their drowned
bodies drift ashore. Is this a decent Europe, award-winning Swedish writer
Henning Mankell asks."The obvious answer is no, it is not decent," says
the crime fiction novelist and theatre director, who is also goodwill ambassador
for the "European year of intercultural dialogue", which was launched by the
European Commission in January.
