EURCP priority prayer
start - EU of Prayer members
The presidency of the
EU in 2009 is major prayer issue that should begin now.
I am sure it will be
high on the Slovenia agenda.
But begin now! Who
would you recommend? You will make a difference.
God called you into
services for purposes like this. I would like to think that you, a subscriber,
and the EU of Prayer were a major player in prayer for this
position.
God bless - Hugh and

PRAY FOR ANOTHER
PRAYER INITIATIVE DEALING WITH THE IMPERIAL FOUNDATIONS OF EUROPE TO BE HELD IN
BRUSSELS THIS SPRING
Rusty Richards, who
also facilitated the Trier initiative to which focused prayer and worship around
the strongholds of Constantine’s era, reports: “Our primary focus, as I
understand it at this point, will be surrounding that event in history when Pope
Leo III "surprised" Charlemagne in Rome and crowned him with the title of
"Imperator Romanorum". (December 25, 800 AD) Leo's motivation was twofold. He
needed a protector (not least from the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople) and
he wanted to increase the influence of the papacy in Western Europe by aligning
the church in Rome (and himself) with Charlemagne and his empire.
2 Small Slovenia takes on highly-charged
EU agenda

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS
- With just three years of European Union membership under its belt, Slovenia
will take on the EU presidency today (1 January) landing itself a highly
politicised agenda.
Of all the issues
that the small ex-Yugoslav state will have to deal with over the next six
months, two are set to dominate the agenda - the Kosovo question and the EU
renewable energy package.
Slovenia has
reluctantly inherited the thorny issue of the future status of Kosovo, the
breakaway Serb province, one of the greatest foreign policy challenges the bloc
has faced in recent years.
4 Sarkozy sparks French debate over God and
faith

Reuters - Friday,
January 18PARIS - President Nicolas Sarkozy's increasingly frequent and positive
references to God and faith have drawn fire from critics who accuse him of
violating France's separation of church and state.Sarkozy, a taboo-breaker whose
whirlwind love life has distracted the media for weeks, broke with traditional
presidential reserve about religion to stress France's Christian roots in a
speech in a Rome basilica just before Christmas. In Riyadh on Monday, he hailed
Islam as "one of the greatest and most beautiful civilisations the world has
known" and described his Saudi hosts as rulers who "appeal to the basic values
of Islam to combat the fundamentalism that negates
them".
4 MEPs rage at choice of religious
visits to the parliament

The visit of an
Islamic cleric to the European Parliament has sparked outrage among MEPs
questioning the presence of religious figures in the strictly political forum,
as well as the complete absence of women on the guest list for future debates on
religion in the EU. Syria's grand mufti, the country's top religious authority,
Sheik Ahmad Bader Hassoun, on Tuesday (14 January) was the first of a series of
religious and state leaders to address MEPs in the context of the newly launched
"European Year of Intercultural Dialogue".

The church's attacks
on the Socialist government may just backfireIT MUST have turned the bosses of
Spain's main political parties green with envy. Less than three months before a
general election, more than 150,000 people packed into Madrid for what may turn
out to have been the biggest rally held during the campaign, in what looks like
an increasingly close electoral race.

The European
parliament has voted for sexual and reproductive health and rights for children.
MEPs approved Towards an EU strategy on the rights of the child, a report on
children's rights by the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.
One of the report's articles calls: "... for Member States to ensure that all
children and adolescents in and out of school are provided with tailored and
comprehensive scientific information on sexual and reproductive health in order
to make informed choices on issues related to their personal well-being,
including the prevention of [sexually transmitted infections] and HIV/AIDS."

Illegal migration and
people-trafficking from eastern Europe into Germany has risen sharply since the
removal of Schengen border controls last month, with many would-be migrants
originating from Chechnya.About 420 people have been caught in Germany’s border
zone with Poland and the Czech Republic in the three weeks since passport
controls were removed on December 21, a German interior ministry spokesman said.
He added that this was an increase on previous periods, without
elaborating.
