1) Lakitelek - Hungary July 2003

The International Christian Conference titled “Values for Europe”, will be held between September 10th-13th at People’s College of Lakitelek, Hungary

[PRAY for the success of this critical conference for these participants who have given legs to our prayers.]

The council will be the second stage of an initiative. The first meeting was held in December 2002 also at Lakitelek, when Christian and Christian Democratic parties and NGOs from more than 10 countries discussed “new chances for Christian politics in Europe”. The conference ended with a Declaration on the common values and conceptions, and the participants founded the European Christian Political Movement to realise the principles and to be the “framing network” of their cooperation. The Declaration and all information about the coming conference can be read on the homepage of the Movement: http://www.ecpm.tk.

[EURCP hopes this issue will be helpful to the attendees at the Lakitelek conference]

2) John Paul II's Decalogue [Basic principles] for Europe

[Some of this can apply to non-Catholic interests also]

[PRAY for the implementation of the items below that best fit the Lords vision for Christianity in Europe.]

Spanish Episcopal Conference Presents Proposals of "Ecclesia in Europa"

MADRID, JULY 24, 2003 (ZENIT.org-Fides). - The press office of the Spanish Episcopal Conference has published an article presenting John Paul II's proposed Decalogue for the construction of the new Europe.

In his last two Angelus messages, the Holy Father expressed his hope that Europeans not be satisfied by a "Europe of merchants" but rather by a "Europe of values." The article proposes the theme of the post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation "Ecclesia in Europa" http://www.zenit.org/english/visualizza.phtml?sid=37964

1. Europe, in its history and in its present, is extensively and profoundly penetrated by Christianity. The Christian faith has shaped European culture, making "one whole" with its history and, despite the painful divisions between East and West; Christianity is the religion of all Europeans.

2. The values advocated by the Gospel will contribute to construct the Europe of the spirit, the Europe of hope. Hence, the European Union will have no solidity if it is reduced only to the geographic and economic dimension, as it must consist above all of agreement on values.

3. Christian inspiration can transform the political, cultural, and economic integration in a coexistence in which all Europeans will feel at home and form a family of nations, model for other areas of the world.

4. The Christian roots are, for Europe, the principal guarantee of its future. To ignore, forget, or conceal the Christian heritage in Europe is an injustice, an offense, a profound impoverishment that sooner or later will have to be accounted for.

5. This is why in the future European Constitution reference must be made to the religious heritage, particularly the Christian, and that its rights must be respected and recognized.

6. In the present context, impregnated with laicism, materialism, and consumerism, the Church must be a consistent witness of the transcendent dimension of human existence.

7. Europe must continue in its defense and promotion of the inviolable dignity of every human person, in his/her entire vital cycle and in the totality of his/her inalienable rights.

8. The Europe of the future will be a Europe of love and preferential and permanent service to the poor and needy, a Europe that promotes the culture of solidarity.

9. The foundations on which a Europe united in diversity will be built are acceptance, respect, sympathy, dialogue, and fraternity.

10. Therefore, "do not be afraid! The Gospel is not against you, but for you." "In the Gospel, which is Jesus, you will find the sure and lasting hope to which you aspire."

3) Carol's Update July 2003. Greetings from Brussels!

Bonjour de Bruxelles!     Goedendag uit Brussel!

[PRAY for The House of Prayer and Carols continual anointing for ministry.]

House of Prayer for all Nations - Brussels ~  There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: ..., a time to plant and a time to uproot, ..., a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to keep and a time to throw away, ..., a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time for war and a time for peace.  ... He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.  I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil--this is the gift of God.  I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. ...  So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot.  (Eccles. 3:1-22)

Our weekly prayer at the European Parliament has come to the end of a season, as the E. Parliament is closed until the end of August.  We've had to say good-bye to some stagiaires (interns) returning to their home countries, but we've seen God move mightily through our prayers.

An Irish Music group played Christian Celtic music in one of the main corridors of the European Parliament last week for over an hour.  Olwyn (from the weekly prayer group), who had taken on this challenge to have them in the Euro. Parliament, was told that the brass ensemble that had performed there weeks ago was a one-time event and that nothing like that could ever happen again.  But, the Lord had other plans.  She was even given an invitation from the European Parliament's President Pat Cox, also Irish.  We have no idea of the impact of this eight-person drum & stringed ensemble, but MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) and others stopped to listen for more than a brief moment.  Even the former Prime Minister of Ireland introduced himself to the group.  WOW!!!  Who knows what God will do next?!  But we have great hope and expectant hearts.

4) New Intergovernmental Conference will start on 4 October in Rome

PRAY for the IGC that it shapes the Constitution in the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

In short:

EurActiv: 14/07/2003 10:00

In the period leading up to the opening of the next Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) on 4 October 2003, the Member States will continue to come forward with their observations and concerns on the draft European Constitution.

[EURCP Note:  It would help to mention that each country already in the EU must have a referendum on the draft European Constitution and must decide on their acceptance of it before any signatures will be given]

Brief news:

Three sessions are scheduled within the sixth IGC, which is expected to be concluded before the end of the Italian Presidency on 31 December 2003. The scheduled approval of the final text of the Constitution by all 25 heads of government by mid-December will allow for the final text to be translated into all 20 official languages so that it can be signed in Rome (Rome Treaty II) in early May 2004. The Constitution must be signed by early May, so that voters for the European Parliament elections know the context in which they go to the polls. Between May 2004 and the end of 2005 the treaty will be ratified by the 25 EU parliaments, with referenda being held where necessary.

5). Polish MPs fired up by constitution draft - 28.07.2003 - 09:49

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

While the Polish government still has to make up its mind over whether to

hold a referendum on the European Constitution, the eurosceptic opposition

has already started collecting signatures for a citizens’ initiative on

the matter.

[“As the final blueprint for the Constitution fails to mention God or Christianity in its preamble, many Polish MPs feel let down by their Polish representatives who had promised to fight for a reference”]

PRAY for the right reference in the constitution to the source of Europe’s human and social values.

Silvio Berlusconi, Italian prime minister and current head of the EU's rotating presidency, has said that it is unlikely that a mention of Christianity will find its way into Europe's Constitution.
