Analysis: EU constitution creeps closer**`[follow the debate]
By Paul Reynolds
BBC News Online world affairs correspondent
The summit has an ambitious and far-reaching agenda
The European Union summit this Thursday and Friday at a resort near the Greek city of Thessaloniki will mark an important stage towards the adoption of a European constitution.

*

Broad consensus
The draft will be presented to the summit on Friday by the president of the convention, the former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing.
The summit will be an indication as to how far the draft [constitution] commands general support at the highest level or whether the IGC will develop into a political battle
He has surprised many observers by getting a broad consensus for the document, which has achieved a compromise between caution and ambition.
The summit is likely to set a date, probably in September or October, for the start of the intergovernmental conference (IGC), which is a process, not a one-off meeting.

Foreign Minister of Italy Insists That Euro Text Mention Christianity
http://zenitenglish@zenit.org/english/

ROME, JUNE 25, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The Foreign Minister of Italy says he will insist that the preamble of the European Constitution make reference to Christianity. In statements published Tuesday by the ANSA agency, Franco Frattini said the draft of the Constitutional Treaty "makes reference to many values and principles."

He believes it is possible to reconcile the principle of separation of church and state, "which is one of the principles of democracy, with the values of Christianity, which represent a great patrimony of the history of humanity." "I think that both things can coexists very well," Frattini said. He added that he is "neither optimistic nor pessimistic about the possibility of achieving consensus on the mention of Christianity in the future Magna Carta."

Italy will assume the European Union's rotating presidency next semester.

In short:
A Europe-wide videoconference debate on the future of Europe started with an interview with Convention Chairman Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in Brussels on 23 June.

Brief news:
Participants of the conference in the 15 current and 13 future EU Member States are debating the issues of Europe's future via satellite links and their debates are broadcast live on the Internet. The organiser of the event, Secretary General of Friends of Europe Giles Merritt, Secretary General explained why the Hearing from Europe week was put together. "The latest Eurobarometer poll shows that 60% of people in the European Union don't know what the Convention is really about," he said. "So we decided to ask the public what they thought about Europe and to get different member states asking each other questions."

Kickstarting the first debate in a series of seven, Mr. Giscard d'Estaing stated: "We want a Europe that is simpler, where everyone knows who does what and everything is democratic."

Participants from Ireland, Poland and Portugal took part in the first debate. Two debates are taking place on the second day, 24 June:

11-13: Greece, Hungary, Romania and The Netherlands;
17-19: Bulgaria, Finland, Germany and Malta.

**More information, edited trailer-clips of each debate and a full agenda of "Hearing from Europe" can be found on the Friends of Europe website. The debates themselves can be viewed via the Europe by Satellite website. http://www.friendsofeurope.org/

EurActiv.com has interviewed some of the participants of the debate:
Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament
Pascal Lamy, European Commissioner for Trade
Lone Dybkjær, Member of the European Parliament, ELDR Group

GODS ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE 2003 MISSION TRIP
Praise & Prayer Ministries International   Hugh E. and Norma Jenson Davis

Visited 7 churches in 4 weeks and our message which was well received.

Visited with more than 50 individuals in private homes, offices and public locations with time for prayer for the European Union by these Europeans.

Attended the A-net church association annual conference for encouragement and fellowship and shared our message (100 persons).

Attended the Pentecostal Evangelism Conference in
Berlin Germany and shared our message (13,000 persons).

Prayed with a German pastor for the EU on top of the German Capitol in
Berlin.

Visited the site of the
Berlin wall and the associated museum which reminded us of the recent history of persecution for many reasons including religion in Europe. Shared with all Europeans the word we received that without prayer for the EU they would loose their religious freedom.

Supported the Belgium prayer conference for the EU and organized a program to mobilize Christians in Belgium for prayer for the EU and developed a template that would be spread to other European churches,

Encouraged the Belgium prayer conference to recommend the first Sunday in May would be prayer for the EU day, and this was passed on the to the head of the Synod which represents the government for all of the evangelical and Pentecostal church in Belgium

Encouraged Christians to consider God's call to political service as a valid call of God.

Got full support from Continental Theological Seminary (CTS) for posting EU prayer notices monthly in the 3 places in the seminary and in the library, a folder for latest EU news and issues.

These EU prayer notices will also be sent to churches for posting.

Will use this CTS plan as a template for other seminaries and colleges in
Europe and in the US.

Found an opening and support for starting our mission work for prayer for the EU into northern
France next year.

Opportunity to visit Spain next year to begin ministry there.
