EU court ‘must heed national feelings’

Judges at the European Union’s top court must pay more attention to national sensitivities or risk fuelling growing public antipathy towards the EU, Wolfgang Schüssel, chancellor of Austria, has warned.  Mr Schüssel said the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice must pay more heed to public opinion and refrain from handing down heavy-handed judgments. Austria is current holder of the rotating EU presidency. His remarks, in an interview with the Financial Times, reflect political and business concern that judges at the ECJ tend to interpret European law to achieve maximum EU harmonisation, rather than taking into account national factors.

Charlemagne -Islam in Europe

Apr 12th 2006 From The Economist print edition

Sending a message to the faithful back home “I BELIEVE there is no European Islam,” said Mustafa Ceric, a Bosnian imam, at a meeting of Islamic clerics and advisers in Vienna. Yet two months ago, his supreme Islamic department of Bosnia said that “Muslims who live in Europe have the right—no, the duty—to develop their own European culture of Islam.” Such contradictions are part of a broad debate over the role and character of Islam in Europe, which could have profound implications, and not only because Muslims are the continent's largest minority. It might affect the wider Islamic world if it shows that Muslims can adapt to modern, secular democracies.

The Pope joined forces with leading European Union conservatives yesterday to call for a restoration of Christian values at the heart of the EU, on a day that cast a further shadow over Turkey's hopes of one day joining the club.

The annual congress in Rome of the centre-right European People's party, the powerful umbrella group that includes many of the EU's ruling parties, heard calls for the club to set a limit to its future boundaries and heavy hints that Turkey should be excluded.

This WEEK in the European Union - Civil society on future of Europe

http://euobserver.com/9/21403/?print=1

21.04.2006 - 17:17 CET | By Lucia Kubosova

Before the MEPs gather at the Brussels plenary on Wednesday, civil society representatives will debate their views on the future of Europe, at an event held on Monday and Tuesday.

The "European forum" will be held at the initiative of the parliament's constitutional committee and tackle questions raised by MEPs in their January resolution, such as the ultimate goal of the EU's integration and its role as a global player.

The debate precedes the first inter-parliamentary forum to be held on 8 and 9 May 2006 in Brussels, as well as the June summit of EU leaders that should evaluate the period of reflection set out after last year's rejection of EU constitution by French and Dutch citizens

Charlemagne Stability v flexibility

Another sorry chapter in Europe's chronicle of unintended consequences

IN THEIR effort to run caring, efficient societies, European countries combine extensive state intervention in labour and other markets with a strict self-denying ordinance in fiscal and monetary affairs. This combination sounds reasonable. The first sorts of measures embody the kinder, gentler qualities of Europe's “social model”; the second limits financial irresponsibility and should thus safeguard the model's long-term viability.

The big three countries of Continental Europe all seem to be in the grip of a political paralysis.

BERLIN With this week's extremely close election in Italy, the big three countries of Continental Europe all seem to be in the grip of a political paralysis. "Everybody in Europe agrees that things can't go on the way they are going," said Wolfgang Nowak, a German economist who heads the Deutsche Bank's International Forum. He was referring to the near zero-growth economies with high deficits, rigid labor markets, intractable levels of unemployment and social welfare budgets that are increasingly difficult to afford.

Following the European Parliament Hearing which CARE for Europe co-hosted on the 8th March, a group of MEPs have tabled a Written Declaration highlighting the fact that the term 'reproductive rights' includes access to abortion on demand, and calling for the European Parliament to "ensure that health, including reproductive health, policy remains an issue of national subsidiarity". It also requests that the European Union avoid promoting controversial reproductive health policies in overseas aid. The full text of the Declaration can be found at www.careforeurope.org.

[CARE urges] Please consider writing to your MEP/s to encourage them to sign this Written Declaration (referenced as 0020/2006). You can find the names and email addresses at www.europarl.org.uk

From YWAM weekly word

“We do not know what the future of Europe will be. Here we must agree with Toynbee, that the fate of a society always depends on its creative minorities. Christian believers should look upon themselves as just

such a creative minority, helping Europe to reclaim what is best in its heritage and thereby to place itself at the service of all humankind.”
