PRAYERNEWS

May 7, 2006 PRAYER FOR THE EU DAY

Ask your Pastor to insert this need in your services on May 7 and hand him a copy of this and the attached poster.

THE EUROPEAN UNION IS RECOGNISED HISTORICALLY THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY.  THE FIRST SUNDAY IN MAY IS A DAY WHEN WE CAN EMPHAISE PRAYER FOR THE EU.

The prayers should be directed at specific concerns in the present and for the future and for the protection of human rights, particularly religious freedom. The bible makes it clear that this is required if we are to live in peace and good order and blessing

A Review or the EUReview and Call to Prayer

As many of you know, we were in our late 60’s and mid - 70’s when we began the EUPrayer ministry in June of the year 2000. (See attachment for “How it all began” and our latest “Ministry Statement”.) We believe it is time to take an inventory of what has been done and what still needs to be done in alerting Christians in Europe to the need for prayer and involvement in the EU government, so they do not lose their religious freedoms. We don’t know when the Lord will say our part in this work is finished -  especially the extensive travel in Europe to contact churches, prayer groups and individual leaders - and can turn this part of the ministry over to Europeans. We will probably continue the research and mailings of the EUReview for some time after that  but – realistically – we need to know what still needs to be done, so we can have some idea how much longer it might take and if we can finish in two or three years.  Yours prayers are needed. Some of you will receive some questions. Your answers would be very helpful. You suggestions and comments are always wanted.

We believe God has called us to:

Pray for the leaders who represent us

Pray for politicians as people

Pray that politicians would know God

Pray with unity of vision

Pray for the leaders who represent us

As 1 Timothy 2v1-4 says, we should be praying for all those in authority.

As Hebrews 13v16-18 says we should make governance a joy, not a burden.

Centre-right EPP revives EU constitution God debate

29.03.2006 - 18:08 CET | By Lucia Kubosova

EUOBSERVER / ROME – The president of the centre-right European People's Party, Wilfried Martens, has suggested a reference to "God" should find its way to the EU constitution if the document were to be revised. The centre-right party opened its "study days" in Rome with a debate on European values in as part of an overall discussion on the future of Europe - a central topic of the party's congress starting on Thursday (30 March).

Common values also feature on the party's draft Rome manifesto which lists "dignity of the human person, freedom and responsibility, fundamental equality, justice, subsidiarity and solidarity" as a set of core Europe's principles. But in a debate on Wednesday, several speakers made specific reference to the Christian roots of the continent and its cultural heritage. Mr Martens, who is set to be re-elected as head of the EPP on Friday, bemoaned the fact that there is "not a single reference to God" in the constitution, adding "We can't accept this to be the case indefinitely." "We should re-launch our efforts to get God back into the constitution," he said.

Pope calls for Christian EU

Pope Benedict XVI has urged the centre-right EU political grouping, the European People’s Party, to work on a restoration of Christian values at the heart of the EU. The conservative Roman Catholic pontiff urged a new political Christianity and warned of a widespread culture that “relegates to the private and subjective sphere the manifestation of one’s own religious convictions”. "By valuing its Christian roots, Europe will be able to give a secure direction to the choices of its citizens and peoples, it will strengthen their awareness of belonging to a common civilization," he said.

EPP leader in the European parliament Hans-Gert Poettering and other leading European conservatives held an audience with the Pope in a move that signals stepped up opposition to Muslim Turkey’s EU entry bid.Secretary-general of the EPP group in the European parliament, Antonio Lopez Isturiz, in an interview with ABC, attacked the isnstiution’s current president Josep Borrell. “To give you an idea: in the history of the parliament there has never been a cabinet like this one, where all members are militants from the president’s group, except for a girl who I think works in the archive,” he said. “We have to talk about the economic situation, the immigration, the limits of the EU, some politically sensitive themes, but someone has to start. We want the EPP to assume leadership of the European institutions.”

European Union calls for online debate

http://www.webuser.co.uk/news/news.php?id=82269

March 28, 2006  Veronique de freitas

The European Constitution has launched an internet discussion website for people to share their views on issues affecting the European community. Margot Wallström, the EU executive's vice-president in charge of communication strategy, says the site is aimed at collecting feedback from Europeans on their hopes and worries on the future of the European Union. In a podcast message, Margot Wallström, said: “I often hear people say that they have lost confidence in the European Union because they feel that it has taken on too many responsibilities and has become very complex and difficult to understand. We want to know what your hopes for Europe are and what worries you as a European.”

[EURCP NOTE: This is an excellent chance for Christians to become involved in the discussion and debate of the future of Europe. Please pray and participate in this opportunity]

Debate Europe is available in 20 languages and asks for ideas on several issues including unemployment, healthcare, globalisation, pensions, education and environmental. The launch of the Debate Europe site follows last year's 'no' votes from French and Dutch citizens on the proposed European Constitution.

European Citizens' Initiative - What is it all about?

http://www.democracy-international.org

17 March 2006 NEWSLETTER #14

The European Citizen’s Initiative (ECI) was included in the EU Constitution. This is a big success for civil society. But the Constitution was rejected in two referendums in France and the Netherlands. This must not be the end of the ECI. Europe needs urgently a better interaction between the EU institutions and the citizens. We see the implementation of a fair Citizens' Initiative as a first step to overcome the lack of democracy in the EU.

European Union – The XXI century castle

http://www.tenerifenews.com/cms/front_content.php?client=1&lang=1&idcat=41&idart=3704

Every year European Union borders face waves of illegal immigration. The number of immigrants is high and is not likely to decrease in the near future. While the Eastern EU border (Poland, The Baltic countries) is mostly targeted by immigrants from central Asia, in south (Spain and Italy) it is mainly attempted by African people. Frequently these attempts to step illegally on European land end in tragedy. Thousands of African immigrant die every year in an attempt to cross the sea to Spain. Recent news about African immigrants drowning near Spanish shores on the way to the Tenerife repeat the horrible situation, and the problems neighbour continent faces. The European Union sets aside tens of millions euros for various African countries every year. What more can be done? How can Europeans help Africa?

The new Europe: respectable populism, clockwork liberalism

 http://www.opendemocracy.net/author/Ivan_Krastev.jsp

http://www.opendemocracy.net/democracy-europe_constitution/new_europe_3376.jsp

Ivan Krastev 21 - 3 - 2006

An emotionally-appealing populist politics is bringing angry, raw, egalitarian nationalists to the centre of Europe’s political arena. Why are pro-European liberals not more anxious? Ivan Krastev offers an intriguing set of answers. Populism is on the rise all over Europe. Populist parties of left and right are winning more votes than ever. A populist Zeitgeist helped fuel the "no" votes in France (29 May) and the Netherlands (1 June) that killed the European constitution in 2005. Moreover, a populist agenda is prevailing at the centre of many countries' national politics, and establishment parties are trying their best to recapture the outright populists' themes and messages.
