European Parliament votes in favour of EU enlargement

The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in support of the Union's enlargement to 10 new Member States at the plenary session in Strasbourg on 9 April.

Prayer: Pray that the new member nations which have strong Christian cultures will be a positive influence within the Union.

 

EU tax fiercely resisted in Convention –

The Convention was on Friday the scene of some fierce resistance to the idea of a European Tax. The idea is now being kicked around in a separate working group on the matter which is discussing just how the Union is expected to finance itself in the coming years.

Convention unveils opt-out clause for EU states

According to the new convention proposals unveiled today, member states will be able to leave the Union in the future if a qualified majority of states agree to it and then arrange the terms of withdrawal.

1. Convention divided over proposal to create an EU public prosecutor

In short:

The Convention on the future of Europe debated the draft articles on the area of freedom, security and justice at its plenary session on 3 April. Whilst there was wide divergence of positions on the proposed creation of the European public prosecutor, most speakers supported the idea of setting up a European border guard.

Convention delegates on Thursday were unable to agree on the idea of a European public prosecutor dashing Commission hopes to have fraud against the Union better controlled.

1. Seven smaller EU members reject idea of permanent presidency

The leaders of seven smaller EU Member States said on 1 April that they oppose proposals by the bigger members to create a new permanent presidency. 

 Brief news:

The leaders of Austria, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal said that the Franco-German proposal to have a full-time EU president appointed for a five-year term would exclude the smaller members from decision-making

Prayer:  Is it realistic for nations of more common culture to have some sort of sub-state government to protect them from the impact of major nations which have more diverse or disinterested positions on some issues?

 

Convention members propose Europe-wide referendum on the Constitution -

EU Convention members propose to hold a referendum on the draft European Constitution in all 25 member states of the enlarged EU, penciled in for June 2004.
