EUReview & Call to Prayer (EURCP) has two main objectives at this time:

      1)  To continue to encourage “First Sunday in May Prayer for the EU Day” in churches and organizations in the European Union, and in other parts of the world, as well.

2)  To identify and contact Christian prayer and intercession leaders, groups and teams in all of the 25 EU member capitols.

We believe we should encourage these prayer leaders and groups to pray for the national and the European Union issues which potentially impact the lives and ministry of individual Christians, churches and ministries across Europe, and the world. [NATIONAL CAPITOL PRAYER PROPOSAL AND THESE PRAYERS ATTACHED]

SPECIAL PRAYER REQUEST: We have received an invitation to participate in a European prayer conference in France in Early January. We need to know the Lords will and receive the travel funding if He wants us to go. Your prayers appreciated. Hugh and Norma Davis

Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke of a strong and just future Germany

Angela Merkel gave her first speech to parliament as German chancellor Wednesday and spoke of a strong Germany full of opportunities and a country that would stand firm on the issues of justice and equal rights.

Merkel, 51, who is Germany's first female leader and the first from the former communist east, struck a personal note when she discussed her hopes for the country's future. "The biggest surprise of my lifetime is freedom," she said, saying she had never expected to see the other side of the Berlin Wall before she retired. "Let us dare to have more freedom," she said, including more opportunities for Germans to pursue their hopes for prosperity. "Who would have thought that the highest governmental office would be given to a woman this year already?" Merkel said.

Clarke attacks Cameron's European 'disaster'

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/core/Content/displayPrintable.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/12/12/ntory12.xml&site=5

By George Jones and David Rennie (Filed: 12/12/2005)

Kenneth Clarke claimed yesterday that David Cameron risked becoming the most extreme Eurosceptic ever to lead the Conservatives. As Tories celebrated polls showing that Mr Cameron had given them a lead over Labour, Mr Clarke criticised plans to leave the main centre-Right group in the European Parliament. The former chancellor, who was defeated in the leadership contest, said pulling Tory Euro-MPs out of the European People's Party would be a disastrous way for Mr Cameron to announce himself on the world stage. An ICM poll for the Sunday Telegraph showed 37 per cent of people said they would vote Conservative if there was a general election tomorrow. Labour was on 35 with the Liberal Democrats on 21.

But the question remains: can this 39-year-old lead the Tories to enlightenment? Thus far, Mr Cameron has done well. He has stuck up for what he believes in, and refused to budge on the drugs issue. He has made a firm commitment to pull the Conservative MEPs out of the European People's Party, because he sees it as a matter of principle and common sense.

SELECTED EU ANALYSIS

Nationhood, modernity, democracy Manifestations of national identity in modern Europe

http://www.eurozine.com/articles/2005-11-17-schopflin-en.html    György Schöpflin

The history of modern nation building suggests that the authority of the state must be grounded in the common cultural and ethnic values of its citizens. In the present day, however, state power is eroded by the decline of party politics and effects of globalization. In this context, argues the Hungarian MEP, cultural diversity, articulated as ethnic identity, will find ever stronger expression. Small states are more exposed to external influences and need stronger barriers to protect their cultural norms. It would help, he says, if the larger states practiced a measure of self-restraint and tried to understand the needs of smaller communities. ]

Britain, Racial and Religious Hatred Bill - a serious threat to free speech

http://www.internationalviewpoint.org/article.php3?id_article=903

IV Online magazine : IV372 - November 2005 Alan Thornett

Britain’s Blairite Labour government is proposing to introduce what they call the Incitement to Religious and Racial Hatred Bill, allegedly to protect Muslims against Islamophobia. Alan Thornett, a leading member of the ISG and member of Respect’s leadership argues that it will do quite the opposite; in fact it will extend Britain’s already existing and archaic blasphemy laws and threaten free speech. George Galloway has already voted for this Bill during its current progress through Parliament and a majority on the Respect National Council appear to find no problem with it. Thornett argues that this is a big mistake.

The House of Lords has voted by a majority 260 votes to 111 to reject the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill which is currently before Parliament. The Government will now have to decide whether to carry out its threat to use the Parliament Act to force it through or compromise with amendments proposed by the Lords.

Commentary: French assimilation vs. British multiculturalism - what integration model for Europe?

http://www.euractiv.com/Article?tcmuri=tcm:29-147799-16&type=News&_lang=EN&email=7581

Published: Tuesday 15 November 2005 | Updated: Tuesday 15 November 2005

In Short:

Trevor Philllips, chair of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in the UK, contrasts the different integration models in France and the UK in an interview with Le Monde of 12 November.

In his attempt to uncover the underlying reasons for rioting in the French suburbs, Trevor Phillips observes that the heart of French identity is "rigid and crushing".  To him, the headscarf affair which ended in a ban for girls wanting to wear it in schools illustrated this. "Making a piece of cloth an issue of national loyalty is to me ridiculous and oppressive," he told Le Monde.
